Westmoreland Fair King Contest & Mr Congeniality Contest Information

The Westmoreland Fair King is an ambassador for the fair. He represents not only the Westmoreland Fair but also agriculture in Westmoreland County.

Who is eligible to take part in the Fair King Contest? ALL requirements MUST BE met in order to participate:

  • Application Deadline is August 1, 2018
  • Must be a male, at least 14 years of age, but not over 17, by August 30th, of the year entering the contest.
  • They must be a U.S. Citizen and a resident of Westmoreland County in the State of Pennsylvania.
  • They must have completed previous 2 years of competitive experience at the Westmoreland Fair PLUS be competing in the current Westmoreland Fair.
  • They must be a CURRENT MEMBER of or affiliated with the organization they are representing.
  • They must NOT hold any other state title for any other commodity group or pageant
  • Must have parental or guardian consent
  • Must be single, never married, and must never not marry during their reign, and must not have/nor father a child during his reign
  • Must act in accordance with the Fair King “Behavior Policy”
  • Must be able to meet all time commitments of the contest, Kings obligations and Dress Code as set forth by the Fair King Program
  • The week the fair opens they must be available Monday evening for practice, Tuesday evening for interviews with the judges and the Saturday evening of the fair for the king contest
  • If crowned king or princet, each must make themselves available as much as possible to pass out awards and attend various events through the week of the fair.

What to do if a boy meets all the above eligibility requirements?

  • Contact the fair secretary, at the fair office (at 724-423-5005 extension 100) and request a King application.
  • Complete and return all pages of the king application to the fair secretary by no later than August 1st of the current year. If application is not post marked or delivered to the fair office by August 1st it will not be accepted. Also, if the application is not complete received at the fair office by August 1st it will not be accepted.
  • A speech (1 minute long) on “Why is agriculture important?” – This speech is to be given the night of the pageant. Speech must be memorized
  • Additional items to include with application are as follows:
    • Answers to the 6 questions on the application
    • An essay (300 words or less) on “What My Fair Means to my Community.”
    • A letter of recommendation from the leader or officer of the organization that is sponsoring the boy
    • A introduction (150 words, double spaced) to be used by the contestant to introduce himself during the Fair King Pageant
    • A flash drive or CD with 2 song selections in MP3 format to be played during the contestant’s entrance. Songs must be appropriate and labeled 1st and 2nd choice
    • Will need to have knowledge of the fair for the quiz bowl

DO NOT include any additional items with the application, the fair office staff and king contest superintendents are not responsible for any additional items sent with application that was not requested and the judges will NOT be shown anything additional than the application.

What are the contestants scored on?

The contestants are scored on the following:

Essay – 20 Points

  • Composition & Content
  • Grammar & Spelling

Personal Interview – 40 Points

  • Conversational Ability
  • Quality of Answers
  • Knowledge of Fair & Agriculture
  • Appearance & Conduct

Contest Night – 35 Points

  • Appearance & Stage Presence
  • Public Speaking, Speech Content & Format

Quiz Bowl Bonus Points – 1 point for each correct answer up to a possible 15 point – Questions will be based on the fair and history of the fair

Possible Point Deductions – 60 points

  • Application Neatness/Presentation
  • Did Not Follow Directions on Application
  • Did Not Turn in ALL necessary items with application

The scores will be tallied up and the contestants with the top score will be crowned Fair King and the contestant with the 2nd highest score will be crowned Fair Prince.
In the event of a tie for any placement a quiz bowl question will be asked to break the tie. All decisions of the judges are FINAL.

Mr. Congeniality (Decided by the audience)

Each contestant will have a collection jar to the side of the stage, those in the audience that would like to vote can make a small donation to their favorite contestants jar.  The contestant that has collected the most money will be crowned Mr. Congeniality of the Fair.  This award is a separate contest and has no bearing on who is crowned King or Prince.  ALL money raised through voting will be go back into the King Contest Program
